Walt Whitman Arts Center's mission is to use world class artists and arts programs to contribute to the revitalization of Camden. Our programs range from innovative mainstage theater, music and dance presentations to neighborhood-based public arts projects and classes in diverse mediums serving pre-schoolers through senior citizens. Anchoring this work for the next generation is  a comprehensive arts education program, bringing multi-cultural live assemblies, as well as hands on arts workshops to our local schools in addition to free summer children's theater presented at the center.

Organization Purpose
The Walt Whitman Arts Center, a non-profit, multi-cultural literary, performing and visual arts center in Camden, New Jersey, is dedicated to continuing its namesake's legacy of artistic excellence. The organization also is committed to ensuring that its programming is accessible to Camden and its surrounding communities.

Our Mission
Walt Whitman's life and work are a chronicle of an individual's quest to embrace the diversity of humanity. He formed a deep affection for his adopted home city of Camden. He found its citizens exemplified the free, democratic and expansive spirit he tried to convey in his writings.

Established in 1976 as the Walt Whitman International Poetry Center, under the auspices of the City of Camden, we have endeavored to develop programs that present the best in contemporary literature while encouraging the enjoyment of a variety of performing and visual arts that represent a broad spectrum of cultures to a regional audience.

In addition to our adult programs, we try to bring programs that both entertain and encourage intellectual exploration by children. Drawing on Whitman's exhortation "to produce great persons, the rest will follow," the center maintains youth and educational programming that ranges from theatrical presentations to workshops for young artists. We believe that the future of art, artists and audiences is grounded in what we accomplish in the present.
