At the Walt:
"THE GIFT"

Come see this exciting co-production of the WWAC and IC Movement, a dance and theatrical company from Philadelphia. Several shows are ticketed, but there are free matinees listed. Check events for information.

The Walt Whitman Cultural Arts Center had been originally the Walt "Whitman International Poetry Center" and many people in our area still consider it to be one of the best locations for Poetry and Literary Events in the region. Just recently the Center won a "Best Of" award from the South Jersey Magazine, for the Best Place for Poetry and Literature. So it makes sense to keep things going, and going strong!

The Walt Whitman Center is seeking individuals who may be interested in attending a Creative Writing Workshop in Poetry. Each workshop is for the serious writer, for those who may have been in workshops before and are looking to develop further with the assistance of others on their skill level. Not for the beginner.

Sessions will be held in the Victor Restaurant (poets get hungry) in the Victor Building, 1 Market Street in Camden. Parking available between it and the River.

We're five blocks fromthe City Hall Patco Stop, and right off the River Line.

Poetry: Tues. 6:30pm - 8:30pm, begins January 20th (all dates weekly thereafter, no interruptions)

At the end of the session, one of the manuscripts will be voted on for inclusion in the WWAC literary journal, Asphodel, to be released Fall of 2009.

The workshop costs $45.00 and is limited in seating to 14. Manuscripts must be submitted for consideration.

  • Poetry manuscripts must be submitted by 1/4/2009
  • Include name, address, telephone and e-mail, plus a self-addressed stamped #10 envelope (for notification of acceptance only) to:
    • Poetry Workshop
    • WWAC
    • 2nd and Cooper Streets
    • Camden, NJ 08102

Manuscripts will not be returned, and need not be considered for the workshop. Send the best you can do. Calling the office for information about the workshop is welcome. Calling about acceptance (except during the week of September 8-12) is not advised. (If you have not received notification of acceptance or denial during that week, we encourage you to call.)

Ten Fridays of Fun!

Every summer the Walt Whitman Arts Center, in conjunction with Camden's own

The CAMPBELL SOUP COMPANY sponsors this wonderfully entertaining and education series of staged shows for children quite little to almost teenagers!

Jugglers, clowns, actors and singers, magicians and storytellers come to us twice every Friday (and sometimes three times!) during the summer vacation period between school years. Shows are nearly always full, so call early and book your troop! Families, especially home-schoolers, welcome too! Call 856-964-8300, extension 104, to make your seating request.

We're planning the Summer 2009 series now, so if you are a performer interested in getting on our stage, call!

The Delaware Valley Folk Life Center programs are under development.

Americana Music is, as defined by The Americana Music Association:

"... music that honors and is derived from the traditions of American roots music. It is music inspired by American culture traditions which is not only represented in classic man made / roots based sounds but also through new and contemporary artists whose music is clearly inspired by these great traditions."

September 28, 2008, Sunday at 7:30pm: Jim Lauderdale, Grammy award winning Americana artist, back by popular demand. Ticketed event (click here for tickets.)

Upstairs at the Walt is a gallery dedicated for the presentation of local and visiting artists. Presently we are seeking shows from other Community organizations for this community to enjoy and from which to learn. If your organization wishes to cooperate on a gallery presentation, call Charles Bechtel (ext.106) or Liz Spencer (ext.108) at 856-964-8300
